Bridging the Opportunity Gap: Connecting Black and Latinx Students to Careers in Finance

This summer, the Greenwood Project will teach financial literacy, coding, career skills, and investment strategies to over 200 Black and Latinx youth, primarily from Chicago's South and West Sides. Their goal is to empower Black and Latinx communities to overcome generational cycles of poverty by introducing students to wealth-building career pathways through the intensive study of finance.

To kick off our series, CNBC highlights the husband and wife duo behind the nonprofit the Greenwood Project, Bevon and Elois Joseph. The name honors the historically prosperous Greenwood community in Tulsa, Oklahoma, also known as “Black Wall Street.” On May 31, 1921, a mob of white residents destroyed Greenwood and murdered over 300 Black residents.

Greenwood Project introduces Black and Latinx college and high school students to careers within financial services. Greenwood Project was founded in 2016 in Chicago, IL with just five students. Now a national organization with a footprint in New York, Boston and Denver, participation has grown to more than 350 students, despite a global pandemic.

October 2019 - Greenwood Project and Cboe Global Markets ring the Bell for Financial Literacy

Greenwood high school and college scholars rang the closing bell of the Cboe Global Markets exchange as part of the World Federation of Exchanges (WFE) ‘Ring the Bell for Financial Literacy’ Initiative. This year, IOSCO and the WFE are working in partnership on a new initiative to support WIW called ‘Ring the Bell for Financial Literacy.’ WFE is inviting members to hold bell-ringing ceremonies during WIW to promote the importance of financial literacy and to raise awareness of WIW 2019.
